My online community life

Filed under: Thought Bazaar, Bilingual — soleilsundance @ 9:16 am

In the past few months I have been a little more involved in online community sites like Facebook, MySpace and Copains d’Avant.

It turns out that MySpace really turns me off. The layouts are messy, and even if it’s great for some people and even some artists, there’s just too much noise on that site for me.
However, Facebook and Copains d’Avant really have been working for me because I ended up finding a bunch of people in France I used to go to school with. From 2nd grade to college. It’s so cool!

Facebook I got into Facebook because of work. We were running ads I needed to check on a couple of applications (man what a burden!). But I wouldn’t have signed up unless I had a real purpose, like the work one. Anyhow, one day, out of the blue, one of my good high school friends writes something on my wall. And I was floored! I was jumping up and down thinking how crazy this is and how happy I am to see this girl’s face after so many years. Turns out, she hasn’t changed much.

So, I thought to myself, if she found me, there probably are many other people I know out there! It actually never occurred to me before that French people could be using Facebook. Well, they are!
I found 10 people so far… That’s 5 from elementary school, 4 from middle school and 1 from high school.

Copains d’avant The other online community I got into is Copains d’Avant. A French site meant to link up “friends from before” or “friends of the past”. You can say which schools you went to during what years and it pulls a list of all other members with the same criteria. So cool! The interface isn’t quite as nice as Facebook (which is not that great itself), but sure enough, I found people… 9 of them.
3 from elementary school, 2 from middle school, 3 from high school and 1 from college.

Let’s do the math here. Number of people I haven’t heard from in 10 years or more and just appeared on my screen lately and who I know from:
ElementarySchool — 8
Middle School — 6
High School — 4
College — 1   Update 2/3/08: 2

All these people have played a significant role in my younger years and just the thought of perhaps seeing some of them next time we go to France, just gives me shivers and happy chills.

J’ai le nez en patate

Filed under: Thought Bazaar, Bilingual — soleilsundance @ 9:44 pm

… that means “my nose is a potato”.

In English it doesn’t seem to translate, but a French person would know that it means I have a cold and my nose feels like a potato because it’s raw, feels huge and ugly!

Why potato? Is it because French people tend to have big noses? I wonder.

But right now, yes. My nose is a potato.

Too early for a Saturday!

Filed under: Thought Bazaar, Bilingual, Travel — soleilsundance @ 6:03 am

Here I am at 6:36 am on a Saturday morning blogging…What does that mean? Yep, you guessed it, I’m still jet lagged! And it’s been 6 days we’re back from France!!!! It normally takes me 2, to get back on track.

What’s going on? Am I getting older and my body just doesn’t react as quickly as before? Whatever the reason is, it’s very annoying. I did not got to bed later than 9:30pm all week because my whole being was being deprived of any energy left to stay awake past that time.
Thursday night, I went to a dance class thinking it would force me to stay awake longer and couldn’t even finish because I felt like I could fall on my face any time. It was time for me to sleep!

I don’t know what to do…maybe I should take naps whenever I want during the day so that I don’t feel as tired at night. I mean, all I’m asking is to go to bed at maybe 10 or 10:30, so I’m guaranteed to sleep until 7 or 8 on the weekends…NOT 6am!

Secret French name for “email”

Filed under: Thought Bazaar, Bilingual — soleilsundance @ 9:07 pm

Filling out a form to request hotel reservation information on a French site, I was asked to enter my “courriel”. What the #&$% is a courriel ? And so I look it up… oh? It just means email address. It’s short for courrier electronique. The best is that it exists since 2003…WOW!

Excerpt from french.about.com :

le courriel [cu ryel]

email

L’Académie française vient de choisir « courriel » en tant que traduction officielle de courrier électronique - The Académie française just chose “courriel” as the official French translation of email.

Envoyer qqch par courriel - to email something

Courriel, c’est officiel

The soufflé that blew!

Filed under: Bilingual, food — soleilsundance @ 10:44 pm

Justin and I are in the process of making a specialized cook book… Everything you can make with ham, cheese and mushrooms. And one of our ideas was to make a soufflé with all these ingredients…and it BLEW! (which is interesting because in french, the verb “souffler” means to blow)

The soufflé didn’t rise, the inside was mushy, the taste was ok, but the texture was literally gross! So, we ended up eating the crust and anywhere it was a little brown but threw the rest away. Yuk!

What went wrong? Could it be that the amount of filling was too heavy? Did I mix the whites in weird? Not gently enough? I have to say that translating a french recipe is also tricky, maybe I got proportions wrong…

soufflé that blewAnyhoo, to make our culinary evening a little more satisfying, we cracked open a bottle of Mumm Champagne and baked some chocolate chip cookies. Much better!

Tellement mieux!

Weekend d’enfer!

Filed under: Weekend Adventures, Bilingual, San Francisco, food, photography, Fun — soleilsundance @ 5:35 pm

(English speaking people, please refer to Justin’s post… I need to feed my french crowd)

My version of Saddam’s death… Ma version de la mort de Saddam

Filed under: Thought Bazaar, Bilingual — soleilsundance @ 6:36 am

Last night, I dreamt about Saddam’s execution… And who killed him? Justin!

This is not even a subject I really followed in the news. A drawing of his face pre-hanging popped up in a magazine I was browsing through yesterday, which may have triggered this:

So, we were in a pretty deserted mall and Justin installed Saddam outside on a little wall. He prepared his high tech shooting gear, screwing together pieces of a gun, that came out of a metal suitcase. He aims and shoots in the head. Several times. All it did was drill a hole, with minimal blood in Saddam’s forehead, still alive and seeming to be bored.
So Justin decides to reload and sits him at a table. He tells me to move aside and not to look. He shoots the man many times, many places. I look over and see him collapsed on the table with a little more blood. Justin puts away his shooting gear, grabs me by the arm and says: “Damn, this man was hard to kill!” And we walk away, hoping he’s really dead.

I don’t know why my brain has created this story. But in an extremely weird way (according to the situation), Justin was very hot!

Apparently, chocolate salami is something well known (in France), but I’ve never heard of it before…Maybe will it be on Christmas’ menu?

Voici quelques recettes:
